1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I joined TpT in September of 2011. One of my teacher friends had purchased some items from TpT and we incorporated them into our lesson plans. She mentioned that it was free to join and that I should check it out. When I heard about top sellers like Deanna Jump and Babbling Abby, who were making in the ten thousands, I thought that TpT might be a good supplemental form of income. Times have gotten tougher and tougher with pay freezes... TpT allows me to create items at home when I have the time.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I worked in retail for 22 years before I found my calling to teach in the classroom. I had thought about teaching as a career path in college, but decided to pursue a career in retail management instead. I started noticing how children gravitated towards me and asked me all kinds of questions, and how I really enjoyed taking with them and explaining things to them. I revisited the idea of teaching, and after being out of school for 16 years, I decided to return and get my teaching certification. As luck would have it, I not only got my certification, but was also accepted into the Masters Program at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and received both my Masters and teaching certification at the same time.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I currently teach 3rd grade in San Antonio, Texas and have been teaching 3rd grade for 8 years now.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

I would say that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by joining Teachers Pay Teachers. Not only do you acquire a place to offer your educational items for sale, but you also develop a new circle of teacher friends to share and collaborate with. You can start off small with the Free Membership, and if you feel that you truly enjoy it and you are making money, you can switch to the Premium Membership.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

One of my highlights was receiving my first check for over $500 this past quarter. It sure helped out with paying those extra bills that pop up in January. I have only been a member for 5 months and did not think that I would have that many sales in such a short period of time. This check has helped motivate me to aspire to work my way up to one of the top seller spots in 2012.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

When I was little, I thought I was going to school to make donuts. There was a donut shop called "Jack and Jill" in my hometown, and my kindergarten went by the same name. My older sister led me to believe that I would be learning how to make donuts at school, and I was a little disappointed to say the least. But I soon got over it and grew to love school, because I love learning.

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I feel that as a member of TpT, I do participate in education outside the classroom. I am creating engaging, quality units that other teachers can use in their classrooms, so I consider myself an author of educational material.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

Some day, I would love to be an interior decorator. I love to decorate my rooms by "themes", pulling things together from many different resources to make the room look "just right". My husband would like to build custom homes, and I want to be the decorator for his "model homes."

9. What profession would you not like to do?

I would not want to be a surgeon. I love the idea of saving peoples' lives, but all the blood and guts would make me nauseous.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

My favorite author is Sharon Creech. I love how she breaks her stories up into very short chapters that tend to make me say, "I'll stop after this next one", but I'm am so caught up in the story that I don't. She has a way of pulling you into her book so much so that you feel a little sad when it comes to an end.

My favorite educational authors are Patricia Cunningham and Fontas and PInell. They offer strategies that are student centered and practical. These authors believe in immersing students in a print rich environment as well as differentiating instruction to fit the needs of the learners.

This book is one of Jerry Spinelli’s underrated books, in my opinion. It’s a great story about beginning romance, finding yourself, being true to who you are, and not letting the pressure – that is so very common for teens – rule who you are.

This book would be best for middle and high school students. I used it once with a Gifted class of fifth grades, and some of the concepts – especially that of romance, was lost on the students. From then on, I utilized it with older students and teenagers. They were much more receptive to the book and the messages of it. Both girls and boys enjoyed the book. That is probably due in large part to the main character being a girl (Star Girl) and the narrator being a boy (Leo).

This book could also serve new educators well, or people who are going through Master’s degree programs for education. The reason I say this is that the book accurately captures the need teens feel to fit in, and at the same time, to be individuals. This emotional battle in all teenagers is important for their teachers to understand, and not forget like we tend to do as we become older.

From the first time I picked up this book as a substitute teacher, I knew it was special, so much so I read the whole book in less than one day. If you are a fan of Spinelli’s books, you probably will too. If not, then I think there is no better book from his collection to start with.

Promoting Learning Outside the Classroom

Three strategies American teachers find helpful to promote student learning outside classrooms are learn-by-doing, community immersion and peer cohorts. All three serve to embed outdoor learning experiences meaningfully into students’ minds. According to MBA Online, many traits of leadership in the workplace are developed through practice rather than hereditary traits. Practical examples cited from 4-H, Georgia State University and California State University exhibit three ways in which students can learn by moving traditional learning outside classroom walls.

Benefits of learn-by-doing include being learner-centric, fosters the performance of admirable acts, brings fun to educational experiences and teaches concrete science concepts, as well as general life skills. For example, students may be asked to work on alternative energy problems to help solve the world’s energy crisis.

After pupils have completed learn by doing exercises, teachers ask provocative questions to cement experiences:

• What were the experiences like?

• How did these experiences affect mental, physical and spiritual well-beings?

• What stood out as most significant when solving problems?

• What about the experiences were relevant to own lives?

• How can these experiences help prepare for fulfilling futures?

The 4-H club represents the epitome of learn-by-doing philosophy, also known as experiential learning. Children achieve self-reliance and build self-confidence by accomplishing tasks with minimal adult supervision. 4-H clubs are great compliments to traditional K-12 education. Students gain real-world experiences through a nationally-recognized organization. At the core of experiential learning are activities, scenarios and dilemmas for children to resolve.

Georgia State University is in downtown Atlanta, an ideal location for fostering community involvement and cultural enrichments. The school offers numerous programs to further these processes. Learners might visit Gone with the Wind author’s home and museum, the Margaret Mitchell House, or participate in Dialogue in the Dark (DITD), where vision-impaired guides lead participants through a dimly lit maze to increase skills such as empathy and understanding.

GSU students comment on the urban locus of their school:

“Downtown Atlanta opens the mind to different things.”

“It makes you want to be interactive rather than just sitting in the library or being in class all the time.”

“After a full day of community service, we do a celebration in the park.”

“GSU is intermingled with the business hub, so [the two] are as one.”

“The location of GSU makes me realize thatcollege is just a part of [a full] life.”

California State University facilitates learning cohorts in the form of freshman learning communities. To enhance first-year college success, freshmen are grouped with like-minded individuals on the same career paths.

Significant required coursework is shared, and a group of 25 students is paired with accessible study partners. Top-ranked instructors give personalized attention to these cohorts. Some of the advantages of this program are help with easier college schedules and planned time for outside activities.

The proof of success for such a program is in the results:

• Superior grade point averages

• Enhanced written abilities

• Better self-expressions

• Higher four-year completion rates

The acquisition of important life skills are important by-products of both community immersion and learn-by-doing programs. These extracurricular activities seek to complement students’ traditional education by allowing them to apply abstract knowledge learned while growing up. Students become better decision makers, build self-esteem and enhance their communication abilities. Also, the ability to strengthen friendships is reinforced, as well as volunteering to help those less fortunate and building stronger communities.

Learn-by-doing creates many advantages for students of all ages. It takes traditional classroom learning a step further and opens the door for increasing life skills needed for successful futures, and today’s students are our future leaders.

I've been on Teachers Pay Teachers since October 2010. I was encouraged to join by a co-worker.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I knew I wanted to be in education when I was in middle school. I was inspired by a few great teachers.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I am a Middle School Math Intervention Specialist who works with students who are at risk of not passing the state assessment. I also teach an 8th grade Honors Algebra class.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Go for it! It can change your life!

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

I feel like being on Teachers Pay Teachers has made me a better teacher. Having products used by other teachers really encourages me to be more creative and organized in everything I do in my classroom.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I love Disney Princess movies. My 3-year-old daughter is in love with them right now... and honestly I don't mind! :) They make me feel like a little kid again!

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I don't at this time.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would love to be a curriculum writer. I really enjoy creating things and coming up with new questions and ideas!

Anything in the medical field. Blood makes me woozy!

My favorite author is Nicholas Sparks. I get "sucked in" to everything he writes!

President's Day was not always one day, and some educators may remember when February included two days dedicated to presidents: February 12 for President Abraham Lincoln and February 22 for President George Washington. Then, in 1971, the holidays were rolled into one and designated as President's Day, which was celebrated on the third Monday of the month.

Why was the date changed? To give workers an additional federal holiday that fell on Monday. Former President Richard Nixon was credited with the bill that resulted in President's Day, but the push to do so began in the 1950s when states celebrated both Lincoln and Washington's birthdays. Even then federal administrators wanted a uniform national holiday, but governors failed to agree on a specific date. Therefore, the plan for President's Day was dropped. When the idea resurfaced again in 1970, it was corrected with House Bill 11582, which was implemented the following year.

President's Day is much more than just a holiday--it's a day to celebrate our country's leaders. Many educators will reinforce important accomplishments and historical facts on the special day. Others will retell stories that portray presidents as human beings with empathy and humor. For example, Abraham Lincoln pardoned the first presidential turkey because his son begged to save Jack, who was destined for the family's Thanksgiving dinner. Teddy bears were named after Theodore Roosevelt when he failed to shoot a black bear on a hunt and a cartoonist illustrated him with a stuffed bear. Conspiracy theories, such as the death of President Kennedy and President Lincoln, fascinate older students. Also, the strange parallels between the lives of Kennedy and Lincoln have become great topics for debates.

Celebrating President's Day should be fun for students. Let them collaborate on projects that highlight unusual facts, as well as stating common knowledge, about our nation's leaders. February is a great month to incorporate the backgrounds of presidents into lesson plans, and check out the fabulous presidential lesson plans from Teachers Pay Teachers that makes learning about presidents educational and easy.

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I joined TpT this past summer (2011), but became truly active in September of this year. I've always loved creating teacher products, and many of the products I sell I am already using with my students. One of my big goals for this year is to learn, share, and grow as an educator... Teachers Pay Teachers is one small step toward achieving this goal!

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I've always wanted to work with kids... that was a given for me. It wasn't until I went to college and truly got my feet wet in the classroom that I realized teaching was my calling. At first I wanted my own classroom, but after doing volunteer work with a local not-for-profit reading clinic, I realized that I loved Literacy and working with small groups of students on reading/writing skills.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I am a Reading Specialist for an elementary building in WNY (grades 2-5). Some of my past experiences include serving as a fluency coach, a Summer Literacy Program Coordinator for a local bookstore, and working in a reading clinic.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

I would advise newbies to the Teachers Pay Teachers market to pick a few products to really "shine" and sell. I made the mistake of just uploading every product I've ever created without putting extra work in. Once I took the time to explain my products, provide directions pages, share possible instructional suggestions, my products started to sell!

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

Although I am in no way a top-seller, it's a great feeling to know that I'm creating products that other teachers can use! I love being able to share my resources and help-out my teaching colleagues across the nation (and world!). It's very inspiring to see what the top-sellers are accomplishing, and I hope to make a name for myself in the Teacher Pay Teachers market!

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

A fun "tidbit" is that I eventually want to write my own instructional leveled readers and children's picture books. Aside from teaching, I've ALWAYS loved books and wanted to become an author! Perhaps I'll be selling more than graphic organizers and strategy packets one day! :)

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I'm very involved in the local reading council (Niagara Frontier Reading Council) and serve as the Social Media Chair and Editor of our newsletter. In my spare time... I blog (http://kristinmjordan.wordpress.com), provide workshops for college students, take part in continuing education, and run an after-school Digital Literacy Club for my school!

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would love to learn graphic design and create my own logos and clipart. Right now, I like to play with free fonts and graphics... but I would love for my products to showcase my educational ideas and my artistic ones! I would never leave teaching, but I would definitely use this side-interest to enhance my products!

9. What profession would you not like to do?

I don't think I could ever be in a position where I don't work with children. I've considered teaching higher education, but even indirectly reaching young students would not be enough! I like the day-to-day interactions and celebrating student progress and accomplishments that I was a part of.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

My favorite author is Chris Van Allsburg. I love how he creates worlds for students to jump into. My all time favorite book is Polar Express!

My favorite educational author is Stephanie Harvey. She is the meat and bones behind all the strategies and instructional activities I create and use everyday. I am inspired by her research and try to incorporate as much research-based strategies and skills into my products!

As professionals we keep an eye out for seminars, books,articles, and numerous other resources that can help us to acquire that newknowledge. Now if you're like me, you're busy, busy, busy trying to balancefamily, teaching, friends, and maybe even church or continuing education. That'swhy when you choose a book in which to invest your time you really hope it'ssomething worth your while. I know for me it takes months sometimes to read abook because my baby just doesn't want to compete with anything for myattention! All these factors considered, it's a good thing I chose No More"I'm Done": Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary Gradesby Jennifer Jacobson as my latest professional read.

Nowbefore I go any further, I feel compelled to tell you that I am not one ofthose people who sees or reads something and is immediately gaga over it. WhileI always try to find something to draw out of the information set before me,it's not always easy to do, and I'm not always impressed. Having said that, I'mgoing to go ahead and tell you that if you are an elementary teacher whoteaches writing, this book is worth your time.

Ipersonally love writing. I always have, according to stories my parents havetold me! That's one of the reasons why writing is probably one of my favoritethings to teach, but it can be frustrating at times when my students just don'tseem to catch the fever! It's a quick scribble of half-hearted sentences, andsuddenly there's a first grade munchkin by my side insisting that he (or she!)is done. That's when you start trying to figure out how to keep the kidsengaged in writing without the activities becoming time-fillers. How do we getthem engaged…and then keep themengaged?

No More “I’m Done” is an easy read with great anecdotesthat can help you to build a productive and effective Writers’ Workshop time. Forthose worried about the amount of time they'll be able to devote toprofessional reading, take heart! This book is only six chapters long. Thefirst 3 chapters run you through setting up and running your Writers’ Workshop.(That's only 50 pages.) This next part may be the best part…are you ready? Thenext two are nothing but a resource of mini-lessons to use during your Writers’Workshop! Jacobson even lays out Chapter 5, A Year of Mini-Lessons for GrowingWriters, with suggested mini-lessons by month! The final ten-page chaptershares her secrets to independent writing formatted almost like atroubleshooting guide.

I'vebeen teaching Writers’ Workshop in my first grade class for about eight yearsnow, and it hasn't always gone well. Lately I've felt like I might be hittingmy stride. I have been seeing my students engaged and showing wonderful growthin their writing, but I'm always looking for ways to make it better. One thingI've gotten out of reading No More “I’mDone” is confidence. I was surprised to see that much of what I haveimplemented in my Writers’ Workshop line up with Jacobsen's successful workshoptime. While some might then question whether this would be a beneficial readfor me, I would answer with a resounding yes! I think we all need someone toconfirm that we're on the right track, and I'll bet you'll have similar resultsin reading the book.

Butwait! I would be remiss if I left you thinking I didn't get anything new out ofreading No More “I’m Done.” While theaffirmation I received reading this book gave me a new confidence in teaching writing,I found many, many new techniques and ideas to implement into my Writers’Workshop as well, helping with organization and taking my class to the next level.Oh, and don't forget…I now have a great resource for mini-lessons to last methe year through! My suggestion to you is that in reading this book, rememberthat this is one way another excellent teacher has found success with herstudents in writing, so read it and draw from it what can benefit you and yourclass. You don't have to do exactly what she does. Use the knowledge she sharesto help shape and enhance your classroom.

Small Group Work Part 2: Setting Up Rotations for Small Groups

Setting up rotations for small groups means same-ability groups can work with teachers while mixed-ability groups complete center rotations of independent tasks.

For easy rotations, try the method listed below:

Rotation 1: Choose either the triangle or circle group (see Small Group Work Pt. 1 from last week's Featured Article) to take their seats first to work independently. Beforehand, set guidelines so that students resist copying answers from peers. Instead, reinforce peer tutoring during group times.

Rotation 2: The second group goes to the second center. Students know which center to go to by looking at colored cards in the pocket chart. Student helpers rotate cards after groups meet. For example, centers might include Smart Board, cubby corner (different centers to choose from), computers (place a folder on the desktop of each with specific games to address learning concepts), and game table (skills based games).

Rotations can last from 8-15 minutes each depending on how much time is left in the class day and what teachers need to work on with different groups and individuals.

While students are completing rotations, teachers do one of the following:

1) Pull same-ability groups to review new information, work on difficult concepts, or challenge advanced students.

2) Have students who missed similar problems on recent quizzes or tests work together. Quizzes can be photocopied so that teachers can work one-on-one with a child. Also, teachers can use their roll sheets to mark problems missed on assessment tests.

3) Teach time-consuming rules of games to the leveled groups which can be incorporated later into centers.

Make small group rotation simple for students by setting up tables with calculators, dry-erase markers, erasers, individual white boards, a student data notebook, and a three-shelf organizer to store manipulatives needed during instruction. A large white board on the wall is used for extra instructions.

Setting up group rotations should be easy for teachers, and centers should be practical for students. Centers give extra instructional time to students and encourage peer tutoring. Enjoy teaching by using small groups and center rotations!

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I just reached my one year anniversary. I was just getting into sharing my teacher materials when Laura Candler recommended me to the site.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

When I was in college I "thought" I wanted to be a lot of things which just turned out to be hobbies (plus came in handy in the classroom later on). Finally I got serious and went back to my childhood dream.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I am in my 6th year of being a 5th grade teacher. We are departmentalized so I am the reading teacher.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

DO it!! The people are AMAZING and supportive. You learn so much, it makes you a better teacher, and makes you want to strive to make better quality materials for your store as well as your own classroom.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

Learning how to improve the things I was using in my own classroom. I was given an opportunity to see how other teachers were creating things, talk with pro teachers with tons of experience, and gain friends at the same time.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I love to paint and draw with charcoal. I love to get on stage and put on a show for my students. I create parody songs of popular music and create words to be educational... then we perform them on stage at our AR celebrations :)

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I am an AVID coordinator for my school so I have been given the opportunity to travel and experience the AVID program not only in my classroom but at a manager level. Such a great program.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would LOOOOVE to be a children's author. I am currently working on a fantasy fiction novel right now... but between two children under the age of 4... the novel is still in major progress....

9. What profession would you not like to do?

Anything that was just a boring desk job. I think I have hobby ADD. I must do different things off and on. So being a teacher is perfect! I can create new lessons and materials and do new things in my classroom all the time!

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

I love Brandon Mull of the Fablehaven Series. I enjoy the Twilight series and the Sookie Stackhouse series.... I guess you could say I have a thing for Vampires and Fairies lol

There is such imagination in these books. I can get caught up in them for hours, they have inspired my creativity, and awakened my lower readers to want to read.

The theory of education is something we were all required to study in college. It sounded good in the book; it was great for discussion, and it made us feel smart! But that same theory tended to fall apart when you became the teacher of actual students. In addition to theory, what we really needed were practical suggestions for classroom management, effective ideas for dealing with children, and management methods that were classroom proven. Well, look no further; this is it!

In his introduction, Mackenzie states that, “Teachers can’t teach their academic subjects effectively until they can establish an effective environment for learning. Classroom management is simply too important to be neglected or handled ineffectively.” The book discusses effective classroom structure, your approach to teaching rules, how children learn your rules, and establishing consistent rules. Throughout the book, the author wants you to recognize the discipline you might be using that just doesn’t work. He concludes the book with how to develop a school-wide guidance plan.

Setting Limits in the Classroom gives answers to the most testing behaviors that you may experience in the classroom. The book provides solid advice for fixing the way you interact and deal with students, and it is also practical in that it gives various real-life scenarios to re-enact in your classroom in order to practice effective management. It offers firm, down-to-earth, and sensible solutions that effectively cut off students' attempts at negotiating, bargaining, and being belligerent towards the teacher. Mackenzie offers many options to the unsuccessful extremes of permissiveness and rigid authority, and all points in between. He outlines no-nonsense methods for setting clear, firm limits supported by words and actions. The book is really a step-by-step manual that shows you how to create structure and methods that work, stop power struggles, motivate students, and even solve homework dilemmas. It is a must-read, and I highly recommend it especially for middle and high school teachers.

To peak your interest, here are a few quotes I especially liked from the book:

"Your consequences will have their greatest impact when they are immediate, consistent, logically related, proportional, respectful, and followed by a clean slate."

"Much of what we consider to be misbehavior in the classroom is actually limit testing or children’s attempts to clarify what we really expect."

"When our words are consistent with our actions, we don’t need a lot of words or harsh consequences to get our message across."

"When we ignore misbehavior, we are really saying, 'It’s okay to do that. Go ahead. You don’t have to stop.'"

This is an ideal book for a whole-school study or new teacher development training. The appendix contains a study-group guide that lists the objectives for each week, as well as study-group discussion questions for each chapter. I have successfully used this book with many student teachers who have in turn used it as a discipline and classroom management guide.

Small groups are helpful in communicating effectively with students. They can be used to review new materials, work with individual students who need extra practice with concepts, and challenge students who need more than what is given in whole group lessons.

Here are some simple steps for using small groups in classrooms:

1) Start with beginning-of-the-year diagnostic tests or standardized assessment results to group students into four equally-numbered, same-ability groups. These groups will work with teachers to review new materials.

2) Sort the four groups of students into eight different mixed-ability groups of two-to-three students per group. This is tricky because you want to group students of varying abilities together, but you also have to consider the social impact of putting certain students together: Will these students stay on task? Do specific students have trouble getting along? Will cliques of girls speak to others? Will boys interact with girls?

3) Once groups are determined, write students’ names on index cards with different colored markers based on the groups they are in. The colors are used to code students’ abilities.

4) Now, turn eight groups into two groups. There should be four mixed-ability groups within the two large groups. Draw a triangle on the four cards of Group One, and place a circle on the four cards of Group Two.

5) Sort the cards according to the triangle or circle shapes then place them into a small pocket chart on the wall. Don't laminate or fancy it up at all because changes to the groups will occur all year long.

The hard work is finished! As the school year progresses, change your groups’ participants as needed.

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I have only been selling products on TpT since August of 2011. I have over 400 products posted and I am constantly posting new items every week. A teacher told me about TpT and I found some great products to use in my secondary social science classroom. A year later, I decided to try selling my products and have been addicted ever since. Sales have been great!

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

My entire family are secondary teachers, so I guess it's hereditary! I truly love my profession. I also enjoy being a master teacher, a teacher coach and a faculty presenter.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I have a secondary social science teaching credential from California and I have taught every subject and grade (7-12) in social science. I am currently a master teacher (I train student teachers), a teacher coach (I help struggling teachers) and a faculty presenter. I also teach an online civics class and also have taught adult ESL Citizenship.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Do it! There are so many fantastic teacher-created items on TpT you will wonder why you never joined earlier. My motto..."work smarter not harder". Your time is valuable, so why spend hours making a power point presentation or a lesson plan when you can buy one for less than $5.00? If only they had this site available 15 years ago when I first started teaching. I could have saved so much valuable time! Also, it is a great way to sell your teacher-created items. You worked hard making them, so why not earn a little cash for all your hard work?

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

Every time a get a notification, "you sold a product" I get so excited! It's addicting. I also have found so many creative items on TpT that I currently use in my social science classroom.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I am the "social director" of my neighborhood. I recently planned a Halloween potluck and over 100 people attended. Can you say "extrovert"? I love to plan parties and events.

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

My goal this year is to create an educational blog and write a book for student-teachers.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

Party Planner...duh!

From the opening chapter of The Gollywhopper Games, I was reminded of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The author acknowledges this inspiration. Twelve-year-old Gil Goodson enters a contest in the company that has fired his father. Gil wants to win enough money that his family can move away and make a fresh start. The competition is videotaped and broadcast like a reality show. What I found most appealing was that the reader can play along and solve the puzzles along with Gil and his competitors.

This book is appropriate for grades 3-6.

“Why do we celebrate a groundhog coming out of a hole?”

At the beginning of every school year, my students read an article titled, “Holidays in the Hispanic World.” In a foreign language classroom, it’s common, and even expected, to incorporate in-depth studies of holidays and to dig into histories behind them.

After students read the article on holidays, they are asked to respond to two questions: “Did you find any of the holidays you just read about interesting enough to want to celebrate them?” and “Think of a holiday we celebrate here in the United States. Is there anything about it that people from foreign countries might find strange or unusual?” Students often respond with questions of their own: “What in the world does a bunny have to do with Easter? I don’t think anyone understands that” or “I think people would find St. Patrick’s Day really weird. I mean, how do you explain dressing in green, drinking green beer, and stuff like that?”

Responses such as these indicate students often have no understanding of the histories behind commonly celebrated American holidays. The histories of world holidays are vast and interesting! Our students gain so much cultural knowledge by researching the meanings behind commonly celebrated holidays.

So, why do we celebrate a groundhog coming out of a hole?

This is the time of year for the turning point in weather cycles of our planet. People all over the world note this time of year as special, and they have created holidays around it. The Celts celebrate this special part of the year on February 2nd with a holiday called “Imbolc,” which also includes weather prognostications. In ancient European folklore, a sacred badger or bear predicted the weather. Christians also celebrate Candlemas Day on February 2nd, and there is an old English song that goes, “If Candlemas be fair and bright, come Winter, have another flight.” Yet, why do Americans celebrate this holiday?

The hub of activity on Groundhog Day in America is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. This region of the state was originally settled by German immigrants, and it is believed they carried with them to America the European folklore of the sacred badger, who predicted the weather at this time of year.

Holidays are never as straight-forward as they might seem to a child, or even to adults. Holidays evolve, and holidays in the United States have evolutionary history because of our multicultural immigration--what a wonderful thing to celebrate!

I became a member of TpT in September 2011 after searching for free printable resources for my kindergarten classroom. I was instantly intrigued by the concept of teachers making extra money by sharing the work they've been doing all along :-)

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

As a young girl, I loved to organize and play school with my cousins and friends. Since then, it was clear I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

Currently, I am a kindergarten teacher; providing meaningful experiences, and engaging the minds of students in an "at-risk" district.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Without a doubt....Join!!! :-)

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

Connecting with other professionals who share similar teaching styles and interests, and making some extra money just by sharing the work I've already created; use in my own classroom.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I love to snowboard, ride 4-wheelers, and be goofy with my family :-)

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

Outside of the classroom, I participate in curriculum mapping; reorganizing and planning the scope and sequence of lessons to coordinate with the common core standards. Although currently taking a break to spend time with my family, I have begun working on my Ed.D.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

Aside from teaching, I would love to be an author, or become involved with research.

9. What profession would you not like to do?

Although I don't have a specific profession in mind that I would not like to do, I couldn't imagine choosing a profession that prohibits mental stimulation and spontaneity.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

My favorite author is Eric Carle. Not only are his illustrations captivating to the children, he incorporates novelty, sequencing and repetition, affiliation, and problem soloving into his stories. Currently, my favorite educational author is Eric Jensen. He promotes and educates his audience about brain-based learning.

Michele Luck’s book, A Lesson Plan for Teachers, New or Old (Experienced, that is!):

A Guide for Day-to-Day Teaching in a High Expectations Classroom, is a different take on the standard ‘Ways to Get Started in a Classroom.’ You know the books, the ones that we all were told about in the beginning of our graduate programs and then again when we started teaching in our first classroom. One of the biggest differences is that Ms. Luck has only been teaching for eight years, so many of the “time-tested” theories are still new to her. This book would be good for older teachers, rather than newer ones – as it would not only be a fun trot down memory lane, but also a fresh view on some of their standard practices. There are also lots of details and examples provided, so those readers that like lots of detail will enjoy the read.

This book may not be suited for those teachers who don’t enjoy anecdotal stories. One perfect example is the very detailed organization section of the book. Ms. Luck goes into great detail to explain why being organized is key; and at the same time provides stories and examples of how this can be done. For those individuals who are more ‘cut to the chase’, these tips and tools might be harder to get through.

Overall, I think that all teaching books have a certain niche of teachers that really need that book. This book’s niche could very well be for the educator who needs to reminisce while learning some special skills.

A Fresh Start to a New Year: Using Journal Writing in Your Classroom

Perhaps you’ve tried journal writing before in your classroom, and you cringe at the thought of grading 150 journals once a week or even once a semester. However, using journal writing in the classroom can be a positive learning experience for teachers and students. For teachers, journaling encourages students to free-write and to write-on-demand, skills often needed in standardized testing situations. Also, it allows teachers extra time to write or to get paperwork out of the way. In addition, the benefits of journal writing for students are numerous: grammar usage, paragraph development, vocabulary practice, relieves stress, and sets the tone for classroom writings. Here are some simple tips for using journal writing in the classroom:

1. Block off a specific amount of time each class period for journal writing. Be consistent! For example, the first ten or fifteen minutes of the beginning of the period works well because it gets students ready to write and sets a calming classroom atmosphere. Yet, maybe quiet time is needed at the end of the class period and journal writing can be done before students exit your room.

2. Create a positive atmosphere for writing by setting the mood. Before students enter your classroom,dim the lights or use battery operated candles for relaxation.

3. Use visual prompts that connect to students. For free visual writing prompts using emotional intelligence strategies, click on the “Free Download” button and recieve Emotional Intelligence Writing Prompts .

4. Choose soothing music for background noise. Try Gary Lamb’s Music for the Mind written to improve students’ brain cognitions, or use soothing piano music without lyrics. Find more music at Gary Lamb's website . Take notice that different types of music affect students’ concentration levels.

5. Make grading easy! Take your class roster, give each student 100 points, and deduct specific points for those observed not writing. This is an easier process than grading 150 individual journals on a weekly or monthly basis. Also, give students opportunities to make-up missed journal writes.

6. Don’t grade for content. Don’t worry about what students write. Some use journal writing as diaries while others write fictional stories, how-to essays, or wish lists. Regardless, students are writing, which is great practice. You may have students who are great artists, so ask them to add captions to their illustrations to meet writing guidelines.

7. Don’t grade for grammar usage. The opportunity to write without worry is relaxing. Remind students to use their journals to practice new grammar skills learned in language arts classes. Research states “it takes twenty times of practicing a skill to put it into long term memory…”, and journal writing is perfect for this.

8. Skim students’ journals and try to comment a couple of times per semester. You will learn a lot about your students through journal writing, and be sure students are given privacy. Ask them to fold pages they do not want read by others. Also, remind students you must refer any signs of abuses to administrators.

9. Write and share journals! As a teacher, it’s an opportunity to practice your skills, and it allows time for reflections. Sometimes, it perfect for writing about specific school issues that affect others, or to give input about certain civic topics. Many “ah-ha!” moments occur during journal writings when students are allowed to express their points of views.

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I have been on TPT for about 6 months. I started a blog and gave a ton of freebies away, then I discovered TPT. I had several bloggers email me about TPT suggested I try to sell some products and I was hooked. My husband and I are trying to have a baby; I needed to supplement our income to help out with the expense of all the procedures I have to have. Our insurance does not cover infertility issues unfortunately. Tutoring got cut off at our school and that was my extra cash but now I have this - love it!

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I guess when I was a little girl and used to make pretend tests to keep myself busy all summer long. I used to be a little bossy and would play school with the neighborhood kids; guess who had to be the teacher all the time?!?

3. How are you currently involved in education?

This is my 8th year teaching. I taught kindergarten for 2 years; this is my 6th year teaching first grade. I keep up to date on educational trends and topics and am constantly furthering my education in every way possible.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Teachers Pay Teachers has been a blessing to my husband and I. I have had great success in a short time. It's costly to get graphic licenses but you will quickly make your money back. It's well worth the time and effort to make products that are making an impact throughout the world.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

I love all the positive feedback I get. It truly makes my heart melt to think teachers are using my products and it is reaching so many children.

6. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I give myself about 30 minutes to clean when I get home. The rest of the evening is spent on educating myself and sharing my knowledge through blogging, with colleagues, and then applying my new knowledge when I teach my students.

7. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would like to teach future teachers.

8. What profession would you not like to do?

I was in nursing school before I was an educator and I couldn't imagine doing that.

9. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

Dr. Seuss is my all time favorite children's book author. My favorite educational authors are "The Sister" who wrote Daily 5; Cafe. Daily 5 has been a huge success in my classroom; its my student's favorite part of the day.

Do you remember Eric Carle’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Although it was published in 1969, Mr. Carle’s book fits perfectly with the current topic of kids eating healthy foods. His colorful illustrations enhance the message of eating healthy foods and at the same time tempt readers to run their fingers over the plump green caterpillar with its bright red head. Many of his books have clever tactile techniques that engage young children to poke their little fingers through holes or turn the page to hear a click beetle within the pages of his books. All of Mr. Carle’s books teach children important lessons that include nature, the sounds of animals, manners, letters of the alphabet, numbers, the days of the week and more.

Even with Carle's great success, one would think that new book ideas wouldn’t come easily to him. His latest book, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse demonstrates just the opposite. The fascinating video below is about The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, and how children relate to colors.

Carle’s inspiration was a German expressionist, Franz Marc, who lived a hundred years ago. Carle had been familiar with Marc’s painting of a blue horse for many years. After researching his life, he discovered that Marc had been a soldier in WWI and when he was killed, his sketchbook with the blue horse was by his side. His book is a great tribute to Mr. Marc and his blue horse.

Sit back, relax and watch this delightful author as he demonstrates his collage technique and explains how the world of color opens doors for children.

We all love Dr. Seuss Day, but think about doing an Eric Carle Day with your students. Allow Carle's work to inspire your students as Marc's work inspired his. Display your students’ depictions of Carle’s wonderful illustrations, create an Eric Carle word wall, and have the kids create soft, huggable felt animals stuffed with cotton batting. Write poems, skits and have book talks.

There is so much that is important and relevant to what Dr. King stood for. What Dr. King, and the Civil Rights Movement, accomplished was monumental. Unfortunately, these values are lost on students of today, who are so removed from the reality of the Civil Rights movement more than fifty years ago. It's important to discuss diversity that can reach students and to provide thought provoking activities that speak to them.

Here are some lesson ideas, alongside other plans various educators and websites contributed, that are utilized to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King's special day:

1. Rosa Parks Bus Project–using a school bus, allow students to pick and choose their seats then discuss why they chose to sit there. Next, move the seats around having boys and girls sit separately. Have some students stand and organize by height, race, eye color, etc. Create verbal discussions about these differences. Back in the classroom, have students do journal writings reflecting on the emotional toll and thoughts they experienced during the activities.

2.Ruby Bridges-use free lesson plans from this wonderful website.

3. Have students watch ‘I Have a Dream’ speech and write reflectively on what the speech means to them;. Ask students to write their own speeches of the type of world they dream of. If time permits, do oral presentations.

4. Have students discuss racial inequalities that exist today. Hand out inequality charts from the link. Be honest and open about today's civic problems.

5. Create a time line of historically relevant activities that show the evolution of Civil Rights. Put students into small groups and give them particular decades to study.

6. Discuss current stereotypes and research where they came from, what they mean, and the powerful impact of those words.

7. Take time to learn about various religions. Create charts showing similarities and differences between religious beliefs. Learn about prominent people from all religions.

8. Try Teaching Tolerance's website where tons of diversity enriched, free lesson plans can be found.

There are dozens of activities to be utilized with students. Since the Cvil Rights Movement is not something we are actively participating in but rather reading in history books, it’s time to bring that piece of history to life. It’s time to help create real history connections for our students and help them produce a world where we can be appreciated for our uniqueness, and, perhaps, even be celebrated for it.

At least, that’s my dream for our future...

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I have been selling on TPT since the very end of March 2011. I could tell that it seemed to be growing and it was around that time that I began getting into teacher blogging. So many bloggers talked about TPT or sold their products on there that I decided I would give it a try.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I think I always knew. As a child I loved playing school and being the teacher. It helped that I had amazing teachers growing up who inspired and motivated me. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I got really serious about it. Except for the brief periods where I wanted to be a meteorologist (specifically a tornado chaser) or a forensic pathologist I always knew I would enjoy being a teacher.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I currently teach first grade in Kentucky. This is my seventh year in education. I am also our school webmaster and technology chairperson. I am graduating this spring with my Master's degree in Teacher Leadership with an endorsement in Instructional Technology.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Go for it! I never DREAMED I would be as successful as I have been. It takes work and commitment to be a big seller. Don't expect killer sales right away. It takes time to build a following. Starting a blog and sharing things for free helps you gain followers. Do not compare yourself to others. Some sellers have been selling on TPT for YEARS. It will take time to become as successful as they are.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

Collaborating with others on sales, products, and contests has been a highlight for me. It has helped me build followers and get my name out there more. Receiving positive feedback has just motivated me more to create new products.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I LOVE Disney! Disney World, Disney movies, anything Disney! If I wasn't a teacher I would want to pick up and move to Florida and work at Disney World. I love the animated Alice in Wonderland. Once when my parents and sister went to Epcot without me, they met Alice and had her call me on my cell phone to talk to me!

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

At school I am on several committees and serve as school webmaster and Infinite Campus teacher coach. Outside of the classroom I am usually obsessing over school things. I spend a great deal of my time at home planning lessons, creating materials, and researching new teaching strategies to use in my classroom.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would do any job at Walt Disney World. Seriously. I would sweep the grounds or cook a hamburger or operate Dumbo the Flying Elephant. I was a classified computer lab instructor for two years and wish that was a certified position at the elementary level. I think teaching Art or Library could be a lot of fun.

9. What profession would you not like to do?

I would not want to work in food (unless it was at Disney World!). I also wouldn't like working on a farm very much.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

I love Mo Willems! His books are so funny and the kids love them. I enjoy so many children's authors as children's literature is my favorite. Professionally I love Debbie Diller and "The Sisters" Gail Boushey and Joan Moser of The Daily 5/CAFE fame.

This trio of books follows a first-year teacher from the first day of school to the triumphant final day. In book one [spoiler alert!], students will be surprised at the end to discover that the person who is too nervous to go to a new school on the first day is actually a new teacher, Sarah Hartwell. I always read this book to my classes on the first day, and used it as a starting point for our first writing assignment where each student wrote about his or her own first-day jitters. The second book, First Year Letters, showcases a letter-writing project Miss Hartwell begins with her students. The letters chronicle the many mishaps and adventures of Sarah's first year of teaching. Teachers will smile at Sarah's enthusiasm and missteps, and perhaps get a bit teary-eyed at the progress of one particular student. This book is a good jumping-off point for a discussion about inference, as the reader must put two and two together to determine what has happened in several of the letters. Finally, Last Day Blues is the touching story of Miss Hartwell's students' quest to brighten their teacher's spirit on the last day of school. Teachers will relate to the teachers' conga line as the buses pull away from the building. This is a fun read for the last week of school as a celebration of how far Miss Hartwell's class, and yours, have come.

Growing up, my friends always told me that I would be a good kindergarten teacher. I never agreed! I always thought teaching a child to read was the most important thing you could do, and if I messed that up I could ruin them forever. Originally, I went to college to teach high school. Then, I put school on pause, married, became a foster mom, and adopted three great kids. Finally, I returned to college in my late 20’s to fulfill my calling to become a teacher—a kindergarten teacher! Guess what? I can teach a child to read!

When I was five years old, I told my mom that when I grew up I was going to be a teacher. Family members asked me, “Are you sure? You won’t make much money.” I think if I had denied my calling, I would have denied a piece of my soul, a part of the reason I was created. I tell people teaching is not so much what I do but who I am. As a teacher, I look at things differently…everything in life is a teachable moment.

Teachers wake up every day and put on their big girl panties or big boy boxers, and they hit the ground running. They live life understanding that each day they face children who love them, dislike them, appreciate them, and go against them. Yet, no matter what these children do teachers care about their futures and love them. With each new year comes new challenges, but it also brings new victories. and I am blessed to be a part of education.

What does it mean to me to be a teacher? It means breathing, inspiring, living, loving, playing, praying, pretending, and of course TEACHING!

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a teacher is “one whose occupation is to instruct”. That’s it? Does anyone else think the definition needs to be revised? Being a teacher is much more than instructing.

Thinking back to why I became a teacher, it had nothing to do with a desire to instruct. Instead, it had everything to do with enjoying being around children and wanting to have an impact on their lives. Yes, my general job description is to teach the standards that my state mandates and to make sure that all students are successful, but what is it that teachers really do? As a kindergarten teacher, I tie shoes, solve arguments between friends, teach children appropriate ways to behave, remind students to use manners, help students learn to work together as a team, and then I get to teach the material they need to learn.

As a kindergarten teacher, a certain part of my job includes teaching children how to behave in school along with how to get along with others. Yet, students walk away with more than social skills. Students leave at the end of the school year having developed self-confidence and critical thinking skills, as well as knowing they can be leaders.

I challenge you to think about a teacher who meant something to you and to think about what made that teacher stand out. Was it the perfect lesson she taught about Columbus? Was it the way she taught you long division? Was it that she truly cared about you? Maybe she taught you to believe in yourself. Perhaps the reason a teacher stands out in your mind is because of her character or the person she helped you to become rather than her classroom lessons and instruction. If true, what does this mean for teachers of today?

A teacher’s purpose is not only to instruct students and to disperse knowledge but to equip them with skills needed in the real world. Whether in kindergarten or high school, there are skills students learn in school that are needed later in the real world. Think about the students you teach. How many years until they graduate? Maybe 2 years, maybe 10, maybe 12 or 13. What kinds of jobs will your students find once they graduate high school or college? Chances are your students will be doing jobs not even in existence right now. As teachers, we are not merely instructing students, but we are forming thinkers, problem solvers, and leaders.

Teachers have tremendous impact on their students. They walk into classrooms with a refocused mission. Their job is not just about preparing students to pass state exams or AP tests. Their mission is to equip students with skills needed to be successful in life. Teachers show students they care, encourage them to think, help them to be great problem solvers, and transform them into leaders.

Do you cringe when you read those two words? Do you immediately feel a headache coming on? Perhaps you have flashbacks of elementary school and taking the Iowa Basics? Then, you’re not alone. “Student Assessment” evokes unpleasant memories for many teachers and students, but it doesn’t have to!

If possible, can you push standardized tests to the back of your mind for a month? A week? A day? The challenge is to focus on types of “student assessment” in your classroom for five days then evaluate the week. Positive improvements should be seen by the end of the school week. Also, new and interesting ways to assess students’ learning will come from reflection.

There are many familiar ways to assess whether students comprehended lessons: presentations, homework assignments, tests, quizzes, and writing essays. For many teachers, these traditional methods are already part of lesson plans, but these are certainly not the only ways to assess learning.

Do you assess while you’re teaching? Try stopping after explaining several examples of concepts, such as grammar explanations. Then, ask students to show on a scale of 0-5 how well they grasped the information. Have students hold up fists (0- I have no clue what you’re talking about…what class am I in?) to 5 fingers (I could teach this concept to someone else.). This helps evaluate needs of students and allows for immediate changes or more explanations, if necessary.

Another assessment tool is to ask students at the end of a class period, “What did you learn in class today?” If students can give short answer responses then they got the lesson. Also, try passing out scrap paper and asking students to write “What I learned in class today” on one side with brief explanations below the statement. It takes only a few minutes to read through the comments between classes. This technique proves how comfortable students are with material covered for the day.

There are plenty of other unique ways that students’ learning can be assessed. Try brainstorming with colleagues about student assessment strategies. Teachers are creative people who are bound to find new assessment tools to use. By assessing learning through a variety of strategies on a daily basis, students will be ready for standardized testing when Spring rolls around.

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I signed up about a year ago, but I didn't start posting any products until April.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I tried not to be a teacher until the end of my freshman year of college. My parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles were all teachers at some point in their lives. I wanted to do something else. I was volunteered to work as a camp counselor and I discovered through that experience that I was born a teacher. I decided not to fight it anymore. That was 27 years ago.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I am teaching a fifth and sixth grade split class in a public school north of Seattle, Washington.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Get involved in the forums. There are so many people who are willing to help out.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

I have enjoyed sharing ideas with amazing teachers who are as dedicated to their students as I am to mine. I wish I could visit their classrooms and have them visit mine.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I was once on a locally televised spelling bee.

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I volunteer in my church's children's ministry.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I want to be a freelance writer. I have had a few things published, but I would like to be published more consistently.

9. What profession would you not like to do?

I would make a lousy waitress. For some reason my ability to keep track of competing needs in the classroom doesn't transfer well to food service.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

My favorite educational author is Aimee Buckner. I love her book Notebook Know-How. I have read it several times through and use her lessons in my class.

My other favorite author is Rick Riordan. I could read aloud and teach from his books for so many subjects. What I have appreciated about him the most is how he treats his readers during author visits and book signings. He had hundreds of fans lined up and he took time with each one to answer a question.

Classrooms are diverse places. Students come to us with a variety of needs and abilities. Their lives outside school have great impact on their performance in school. Some students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch at school while others are made to pay for theirs. Is this fair? I doubt any of us would argue against it. But, is it equal? Fair Isn't Always Equal.

Rick Wormeli challenges teachers to keep this in mind when developing grading practices as well. Discussions about grading practices can quickly become a heated debate. Grading scales are as varied as the students who enter our classrooms. It is also a topic that is breezed right over in teacher education programs. Very little time is spent critically thinking about the impact a zero will have on a students' grade. Consider this point made by Wormeli: Assigning a zero for work that was not completed does not show what a student can do, it shows what he/she did not do.

If you're looking to grow professionally this holiday season, consider picking up a copy of the book "Fair Isn't Always Equal". Whether you agree or disagree with the points Wormelli makes isn't the point. The point is that you take time to reflect on your grading practices and how they affect your students. I believe all teachers want to be fair. Now the real question is: Does that mean we treat all students equal?

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I have been a seller on TPT for four years now. It's been an interesting experience, and for the most part the idea that my lessons and teaching ideas have spread around the country and maybe even the world has been the greatest reward. I joined TPT because my middle school colleagues considered me the "go-to guy" for lesson plans and activities for many years and gave me positive feedback on my teaching units. I decided to look for a wider audience for my work and with TPT I found it.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I did not even consider teaching as a career until I was 23. I had graduated with a political science/history degree and woke up one morning realizing that the knowledge I had gained in studying those majors, while valuable and rewarding to me, was not as transferrable to the world of work as I would have liked. So by chance and dumb luck I took a part-time job as a teacher's aide at a middle school to pay the bills. I enjoyed it and soon I fell in love with the idea of becoming a teacher. A year and half later later I was the teacher in my own classroom and I have been ever since.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Accept the fact that not everyone is cut out to be a seller on TPT and that it may or may not be right for you. Other than that, my advice would be threefold. First, be prepared to put in long hours and use those hours to create the best possible products you can. Quality over quantity; it took me quite a while to figure that one out. Second, have patience and don't expect great sales numbers overnight or even in a year. Be realistic, it takes time and in all probability you aren't going to become an Internet millionaire or quit your day job (that is a good thing!). Third, remember what I tell myself about many things in life, including TPT: Things are never as good as they may seem and they are never as bad as they may seem.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

This is a long sentence but I think it says it all for me: The highlight has been the interaction and communication with so many dedicated and creative professionals who have become entrepeneurs and in doing so have taken some of the power away from the corporate publishing companies who have controlled educational publishing for so long and produced what I think are bland and inferior materials for our kids.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I use my modest TPT income to support my continual addiction to the sport of skydiving.

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I end up serving on virtually every committee my school creates, so I am rather busy outside the classroom. I am currently using my school's new 1 to 1 Mac program as a way to become a more up-to-date user of technology in the classroom. This old dog is learning some new tricks!

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I'd like to be a skydiving instructor, and I know I could do it. But that is not in the cards and my family would kill me as they find my current skydiving habit hard enough to swallow.

9. What profession would you not like to do?

I would hate to be a school administrator. I have had multiple opportunities to leave the classroom for administration over the past 27 years and turned every one of them down. I have never regretted that for one minute. Administrators often have as hard or a harder job than teachers. I know it isn't popular to say that but it is what I believe.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

My favorite author as an adult reader is John Cheever. His books are amazing works of art. In education I love Robert C. O'Brien, the author of both Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and my all-time undiscovered gem of a children's novel: The Silver Crown.

Minli lives in the shadow of Fruitless Mountain. Her family barely grows enough rice to feed themselves, but Minli buys a goldfish on impulse. When her mother criticizes her purchase, she sets her pet free and decides to change the family fortune by finding the Old Man of the Moon.

Grace Lin’s book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon reads like a novel-length Chinese folktale with shorter tales in between. Her artwork enhances this impression.

I have been a Grace Lin fan since the year my niece was adopted from Taiwan, and I have enjoyed buying and sharing her books ever since.

This book is most appropriate for grades 3-6 or a read aloud to a younger child.

To Teach or Not to Teach Shakespeare: “That is the Question!” 11/28/11

As a middle school teacher, my decision to teach Shakespeare was simple. In my mind, students needed an introduction to the famous author and his classic works. After all, the themes of the plays are timeless. There are also other novels and short stories students will encounter that reference Shakespeare. It seemed logical that an overview would benefit students and their future teachers. Were there objections? Yes, there were high school teachers who opposed my teaching Shakespeare in the earlier years. They argued that the works were already covered in their entirety in eleventh and twelfth grades, but once these colleagues reviewed the lower-level materials, everyone approved of the lesson plan.

The key words in teaching Shakespeare to younger students are “introduction” and "overview." It’s important to remember that middle school students’ personal experiences and depths of relationships do not equal those of high-schoolers or adults. Therefore, keep the lesson plan simple, engaging, and informative. Here is what I did. First, my students brainstormed what they knew about Shakespeare. Then we brought lots of related books and pictures into the classroom. Students broke into small groups and chose the topics below, based on the dates of Shakespeare’s life (1564-1616), to present background knowledge through timelines, or other media, to their classmates:

Next, students chose comic books of the works (free previews are available at Classical Comics) to read in small groups. Then, as a whole class, students performed the shortened Scholastic versions of the plays. With each play, I showed highlighted sections of the BBC movies, on loan from the local library. I chose passages from the original Shakespeare works (free audio is available at Librivox) that matched middle grade level literature concepts, such as irony and symbolism.

For assessments, I asked students to translate Brutus’ “Speech to the People” into modern speech from various times (Illustration 1), such as the language used from the 1950s up to 2011. Online time period dictionaries, such as Alpha Dictionary's Historical Slang Dictionary, have lists of slang words. For exams, students formed small groups, chose one scene, listed the main idea, and constructed creative artworks of the literal interpretations (Illustration 2).

An introduction, or overview, of Shakespeare helps students understand the author, his life, and the plots and themes of his plays when they read and study complete works later in their academic careers. Students will feel more comfortable with this difficult subject matter if they have previously approached the subjects in fun, collaborative settings with lots of discussions and visuals. Are you ready to help your students enjoy Shakespeare? "That is the question!"

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I discovered Teachers Pay Teachers by accident one day about two years ago. I was just surfing the web for teaching ideas and came across it. I decided to post a few items as an experiment.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

I cannot remember not wanting to be a teacher. At first, it was a chance to be bossy toward my younger sister and cousins. Now, it is an opportunity to make a positive impact on my students.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I am a reading teacher and English teacher in a high school. I work with grades 9 - 12 teaching core English classes and English academic intervention classes that focus on skill improvement.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

Take some time to learn from others by reading the blogs and looking at the products of successful sellers. I have learned so much from the TPT community.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

The highlight thus far was receiving some really positive feedback from buyers/fellow teachers.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I am a former collegiate rugby player.

7. Do you participate in education outside of the classroom? In what type of role?

I write for Teach Hub and am involved with the National Writing Project.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

I would love to dive head first into professional writing.

9. What profession would you not like to do?

I could never work in a situation where I sit at a desk for long periods of time. I have to move. I teach on my feet all day long.

10. Who is your favorite author? Favorite educational author? And why?

My favorite author... that's not fair, there are so many. I do love John Steinbeck because he is a fabulous story teller and loved to write about the underdogs of the world. Right now my favorite educational author is Kelly Gallagher because what he writes makes sense. I also admire that, even in the wake of his fame and popularity, he remains grounded in his classroom.

This time, Mama Junebug's little mischief-maker sneaks off into his closet when doggie school is placed off limits. There he meets up with his old friends, Los Chimichangos, and goes paw-to-paw with wooly-bully. There's no doubt Skippyjon will have you chuckling away as you follow him through the most disorganized school day ever!

The storyline is brand new, but your kids will welcome the familiarity of structure and rhymes used throughout the Skippyjon stories. Even though much of the imaginative language involves translation through the addition of "-ito" to the end of words, Schachner also throws in a handful of actual Spanish vocabulary. I always love involving my Spanish speaking students as we read, drawing on their knowledge of the language. Their faces light up as they recognize words from their native language and swell with pride as you ask them to explain what they mean. I find this particularly important for my entering level ESOL / ELL students.

Aside from the wonderful storytelling which transports you into the wild imagination of a kitten convinced he's a dog, there is so much more than entertainment to be found in the story. As a teacher you can use the faux Spanish and actual Spanish words to teach your students to use context clues to decipher meaning. The story is also great for fluency and decoding practice. The rhythmic writing provides a great practice ground for fluency as students read to self and read to others while the chants and made-up words throughout the story challenge students to use their reading strategies to decode the unknown words. Fun and educational!

Truth be told, I'm not really sure who gets more excited about these Skippyjon Jones books: me or my students? I think we must feed off of each other. Though it's hard for me to choose my absolute favorite Skippyjon adventure, my students definitively voted Skippyjon Jones Class Action as their new favorite. Whichever installation you love best, none have disappointed, so I for one will be waiting anxiously for my next opportunity to join my big-eared friend on his next trip into the closet!

Students are excited when computer time rolls around! There are so many online resources to use when teaching or letting children use computers at home or at school. The many options can be overwhelming. A great way to narrow choices for site selections is by using the following criteria:

1. No or limited advertising

2. Educational values

3. Benefits for teachers and parents

4. Associated with nationally known groups or businesses

5. Students should be able to explain what they learned

6. Includes SMART Board use that engages all students in the class

First, limited or no advertising is an important requirement, especially for young viewers. However, there is still the need to teach children not to follow extra links that look enticing without asking permission and being willing to accept “no” for an answer.

Second, reinforce that cheating to complete online activities is not acceptable. Many students use codes, tricks, or advice from friends to win while playing electronic games at home. Therefore, they are very familiar with such techniques. Parents and teachers need to point out that getting to the end of activities is not the goal whether working at home or on school computers. The goal is to learn.

Third, the best sites have teacher or parent resources associated with them. If you look at home pages for educational sites, there are varieties of free resources and materials for students, parents, and teachers.

Fourth, the sites should be associated with nationally known groups or businesses that are likely to remain in business over time. These are the most excellent and reliable types of sites. Websites that look like they could change hands tomorrow may disappear quickly. Also, be sure to review new sites for appropriate child content. Remember, parents and teachers need to be nearby during children’s computer uses.

Fifth, children should be able to explain what they learned during computer time. The best sites offer print-outs of activities, which children are happy to share. If children simply "had fun", check the site for education values then assess whether new or different sites might be needed. Having fun, although it can be a motivational component of the lesson, is not the goal of educational computer time.

Sixth, if SMART Boards are available in classrooms, educational sites meeting the above criteria should be able to hold interests of students for whole group site demonstrations. SMART Boards save time in computer labs, and they help students avoid advertising links.

By following these simple guidelines when looking for appropriate online resources for students, your computer lessons will be educational, as well as engaging and fun!

1. How long have you been on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you decide to be a part of it?

I have been with Teachers Pay Teachers from almost the very beginning in July of 2006. I had published an ebook, Simple Steps to Sentence Sense, that I was selling from my website. When I discovered TpT, I realized I had many units and materials that might benefit other teachers, so I joined and began selling those products also.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be in education?

My grandmother and my mother were both teachers. I grew up in a family that values education. In college, I became a substitute teacher to earn money for tuition, and after my first day in the classrooom, I was hooked. I changed my major to education, and never looked back. I taught in public schools for 34 years, and have worked as an educational consultant and as a creative writing teacher for adult education classes.

3. How are you currently involved in education?

I teach creative writing classes to adults, write educational materials, and write an educational blog.

4. What would be your advice to people who are considering joining Teachers Pay Teachers?

It is a wonderful place to share materials that have been successful in your classrooms, and it is a great place to meet and converse with other teachers. I would advise anyone to join and participate.

5. What has been a highlight, thus far, about being on Teachers Pay Teachers?

I have enjoyed getting to know other teachers who sell materials on TpT, and I have enjoyed corresponding with people who have purchased my products.

6. What is something fun about you that other teachers don’t know?

I write romance novels, and general fiction as well as nonfiction grammar workbooks.

I would not enjoy a profession that required mathematical skills.

James Lee Burke is one of the most gifted authors I have ever read. His use of imagery and his strong, realistic characters are as well drawn as many of those in the literature books being taught in classrooms today.

Richard Lederer is my favorite educational author. He is witty and wise and I learn something every time I read him.

Let’s talk turkey! It doesn’t matter what grade you teach, there are many lessons that involve this funny bird. Last week, I drew a turkey on a piece of art paper.

Then, I let my kindergarteners color it. This activity is good for students’ fine motor skills, and they take ownership of the project if they help create it.

What else can be done with this big bird? Use different colored sticky notes and label them with: adjectives, colors, nouns, facts about turkeys, and their body parts. The possibilities are endless! Large Thanksgiving pictures can be turned into interactive writing charts. For example, a Native American Indian, a teepee, and a pilgrim can be used to write about cultures, lifestyles, settings, and symbolism throughout your Thanksgiving unit.

Another holiday learning activity students enjoy the week before Thanksgiving break is to read aloud Monster Sandwich by Joy Cowley. Create a chart of items students want to place on their Monster Sandwich. Then, have students sign up to bring goodies for a “Thanksgiving Feast” to build a Monster Sandwich.

Make sure students have jobs, such as cutting tomatoes, handing out plates, seating guests… Finally, feast as a group! I never thought I would share a six foot sandwich layered with cucumbers and a side of Cheetos, but my students loved this activity.

The project is a great way to make a connection with the text while learning about pilgrims and Native American Indians.

These Thanksgiving holiday learning activities will have your students using higher level thinking skills. Remember to give your students opportunities to expand on what they have learned and to apply concepts to real life for lasting connections. Students will be THANKFUL for your contributions to interactive learning!

It's easy to get caught up in the stress of the holidays. Yet, it's important to remind ourselves and others what we are thankful for.

Past teachers had no copy machines or computers with printers. Therefore, we are thankful for advances in technology. We are thankful for document cameras and SMART Boards. All of these reinforce active learning, and we are thankful administrators are encouraging more hands-on learning.

We are thankful to have Blogger to share and collect great ideas from creative teachers. We are very thankful to be able create and sell teaching materials on Teachers Pay Teachers. Also, we are thankful for other inspirational, educational sites that encourage teachers to collaborate.
