<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Teachers across the state of Oklahoma have lost years of accumulated
teaching materials. How, as educators, can we lend helping hands to our
fellow teachers? As soon as the news of Moore, Oklahoma, hit television
stations, TPT (Teachers Pay Teachers) participants came together to
donate teaching units to make four teaching bundles. These include lower
and upper elementary. The bundles are
for sale at TPT for $25, and <i>all proceeds go
directly to help teachers in Moore, Oklahoma</i>. There is more information and a
listing of the products at <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Search:oklahoma+tornado+list" target="_blank">Teachers Care for Oklahoma</a>. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's been a challenging school year for many educators with Sandy Hook, Hurricane Sandy, plains states tornadoes, and much more. Being able to support and help others in times of need are what teachers do best; after all, we use these skills every day in our classrooms. A huge "Thank you!" to those who have helped, tried to help, and continue to help teachers in need. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Spring--time to reflect upon the school year. As the end of school draws near, it's time <span style="font-size: small;">to think about</span> some of the issues affecting today's teachers. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.nea.org/home/12630.htm" target="_blank">"Why They Leave" </a>, an article </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">by Cynthia Kopkowski </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">for the National Education Association<span style="font-size: small;">,</span> states:</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> "Nationally, the average turnover for all teachers is 17 percent, and in
urban school districts specifically, the number jumps to 20 percent,
according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The National
Commission on Teaching and America's Future proffers starker numbers,
estimating that one-third of all new teachers leave after three years,
and 46 percent are gone within five years" (1).</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Perhaps you graduated from a traditional teacher education program at a
four-year university. </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">I</span>n 1999</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> at the University of Oklahoma, the teacher
education program required five or more years compared to four-years graduation time for other
disciplines, such as accounting, communications, or engineering. Yet,
graduates entering into other fields made double, or triple, the salaries of
first-year teachers. In Texas<span style="font-size: small;">, a firs<span style="font-size: small;">t-year teaching salary was ap<span style="font-size: small;">proximately <span style="font-size: small;">$32,<span style="font-size: small;">000.00<span style="font-size: small;"> compared to a first-year engineering position that started at above $<span style="font-size: small;">8</span>0,000.00. </span></span></span></span></span></span>Although teachers do not join their professions for monetary reasons, it would be nice to have proper currency amounts attached to the field. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">A</span> 2012 comparison chart from the <a href="http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_chart_001.htm" target="_blank">United States Department of Labor</a> reads: </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><img border="1" height="340" src="http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_chart_001.gif" width="640" /></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">As educators, few teachers, other than top administrative positions, earn salaries equal to those recommended by the United States Department of Labor. In fact, there are instances reported in the plains' states of districts' whose teacher employment applications included food stamp applications due to low pay. Those not in the teaching field might ask: what about evaluation and performance pay? It won't be rec<span style="font-size: small;">eived</span> if subject matters taught are not state tested, so often<span style="font-size: small;"> times</span> those who work hardest with behavioral students, ESL or special education students will never see evaluation or performance-based pay. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The argument that teachers work only "nine-months of the year" has many crying "<span style="font-size: small;">F</span>oul!" Employees in regular workforce positions often receive same amounts of vacation time although it may be spread out over the course of one year. For example, employees at banks, cellphone/technology companies, and oil related professions may acquire and roll over time accrued that may amount to as much as six-months or more. Plus, there are no bus or cafeteria</span> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">duties,
no extra-curricular afterschool activities, no open houses, and no
parent-teacher conferences to attend. There are no individualized lesson
plans to write, and no state tests to prepare for. Also, during the
off-peak summer months, teachers must attend professional developments
to renew certification hours, and they re-write lesson plans for
upcoming school years.</span></span><br />
<br />

The nation-wide movement to reform education begins with value being place<span style="font-size: small;">d </span>on the profession of teaching<span style="font-size: small;">.</span> Until then, the question remains: how can we help fellow teachers survive their first three, or more, years? </span></span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0b_-wkrMDBDxwuvi827OkbAilxYkUTZMbumZMbdp9lGQnCSJUJsLM46aAx_qVO5Ui2VBG1OTRR-0tshrFB7zpY_hZyObRg5WJt2Unx0ndXzKRWvSzkP3xcXHzCTcF6NKBEPmM5EGb/s1600/study.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0b_-wkrMDBDxwuvi827OkbAilxYkUTZMbumZMbdp9lGQnCSJUJsLM46aAx_qVO5Ui2VBG1OTRR-0tshrFB7zpY_hZyObRg5WJt2Unx0ndXzKRWvSzkP3xcXHzCTcF6NKBEPmM5EGb/s320/study.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">21st century learners are waiting for educational institutions to catch up to their technological needs. That's why adaptive learning is so important--it allows 24/7 access with personalized learning plans and life-like coaches, who answer questions and explain concepts. It allows for flipped models of instruction, encourages teachers to use visual aids, and let's students work at their own paces.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The push to use computerized learning software has increased as Common Core State Standards are implemented across the nation. Even states that opted out of federal guidelines to develop their own state tests realize the inevitable--students will someday test solely on computers. Fight the trend if you must, but it may be a losing battle if funding can be acquired to outfit the nation's schools with low cost tablets and updated networking systems. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">At the forefront of research on adaptive learning is <a href="http://www.area9learning.com/ulrik.html" target="_blank">Dr. Ulrik Christensen</a>, founder of <a href="http://www.area9learning.com/about.html" target="_blank">Area 9</a>, from Denmark. He continues his work of finding an "improved, highly individualized way of learning" that meets 21st century learners' needs. The result of Dr. Christensen's research was <a href="http://learnsmart.prod.customer.mcgraw-hill.com/" target="_blank">LearnSmart</a>, a learning adaptive platform designed to adjust to students' skill levels and learning traits. For students, this means the more they interact with <a href="http://learnsmart.prod.customer.mcgraw-hill.com/" target="_blank">LearnSmart</a> adaptive learning programs, the better the programs become at understanding their learning styles and meeting their educational needs. For teachers, it aligns to Common Core or state standards with a few key strokes. It breaks down data and takes the guesswork out of assessment. Want to know what concepts students should focus us? Run group or individual data. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zf-BIeVvXtQ?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> See a lesson in action </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">There are many software
programs with features that individualize learning for students. After
students take their diagnostic tests, lessons are customized for them by
the program or by the teacher, who sets up lessons aligned with
objectives. Reports can be run to determine which skills students need
to improve. However, LearnSmart breakdowns include: completion, items
missed, metacognitive skills, and more. It recognizes what students need
to study, what style of learning is best, and when materials need to be
reviewed. An interactive e-book, or Smartbook, asks questions as
students read text then directs students to passages for proof. It
highlights important materials, which can then be added to digital
clipboards, and it helps students focus on what's important within
chapters. Best of all, students can access LearnSmart from
Android/Ipad/Ipod apps and from PC and MAC; it is open 24/7 and the
virtual coach is always there!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Students sang along and smiled; they "got it!" They formed small groups then made posters that demonstrated their understandings of irony, along with real life examples. As they worked on projects, they chatted about poems, songs, and writings that contained examples of irony. They joked about real life examples, and they discussed ways to explain and illustrate the concept on their posters. The buzz of the bell came too quickly for students. They put away their supplies then made plans to finish their work tomorrow. It worked--students were engaged, and they enjoyed learning ! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Think back to when you learned nursery rhymes. Can you recall them with little effort? What was your favorite song as a child? Can you sing the song today? What song defined you in high school? Chances are you know the lyrics today. There's something about music and words that brings learning alive and makes memorizing content easy. An elementary class taught by Betty Jackson in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, in 1995, piloted a Saxon program that used songs to teach concepts to students. One of the students, who is now twenty-four, recalls the songs' lyrics with ease. "I'll never forget them! I still use them today, especially spelling rules..." said Zach. This is only one of the advantages of learning concepts through songs.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Where do you find good lesson plans that include music and song lyrics? One of the best websites is operated by the <a href="http://rockhall.com/" target="_blank">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame</a>. Lesson plans range from pre-k to adult learners. They include lyrics and supplemental resources, such as easy to follow guides, materials lists, videos and web sources. Objectives and outcomes are addressed, along with state guidelines. Implementing songs into any discipline has never been easier! An extra bonus: apply for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's <a href="http://rockhall.com/education/inside-the-classroom/summer-teacher-institute/" target="_blank">Summer Teacher Institute</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Another option is <a href="http://www.flocabulary.com/" target="_blank">Flocabulary</a>. Remember School House Rock? Transform it into modern day with quality videos and lesson plans. The site addresses most subject matters, and be aware that these tunes are catchy! There's even a contest for students to write their own songs. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">A free school trial is being offered through June. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I have learned how to do a lot of graphic design on the computer.

goes more into his dream. I wanted to be able to share my love of reading with
my students. I<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">My most memorable field trip was my first ever field trip. We went
to the zoo. There were (what seemed like) 900 million kids there as soon as we

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Teachers Pay Teachers has taught me the value of being creative
and allowing my students opportunities for engaging and meaningful lessons.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I just loved A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. That book
kind of rocked my world. I remember spending hours imagining Meg and her three
strange friends. I was completely eaten up with the idea of tessellating. I
could go on and on. That book kept me up at night.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

something you would like to see in the future, for education?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I would love to see more of a focus on student-led instruction. I
believe in allowing students to make their own discoveries and manipulate
content to make it fit each of them and their individual needs. As a teacher, I
feel my job is not to "teach" but to "guide" students to
teaching themselves and their classmates. I would love to see a shift in that
direction. Also, smaller class sizes ;)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I really love playing pranks on people. My parents always told me
I was "ornery" and I suppose that ornery streak has carried through
to my adult years. Even my poor students have been subjected to my pranks. I
have plastic wrapped doorways, placed whoopie cushions in many a chair, and even
purchased "fake vomit." Suffice it to say that April Fool's Day is a
much-anticipated day in my classroom and my home :)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">In 2009, I became the first
person on my father's side of our family tree ever to graduate from college. I
was very honored to hold that title. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I received an educational award this year as well when I was
nominated by a former student's parent and selected for a local radio station's
Teacher of the Week feature. I was surprised in my classroom by a radio dj and
was live on air as the nomination letter and prizes were read to me. I was so
touched I was in tears. Unfortunately, I sounded like a total dork on the radio!
But, what can you do? :)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I posted a Geometry Terms quiz as my free item. I chose the quiz
because I found that while I was able to find many vocabulary quizes and
lessons for reading, it was difficult to locate any vocabulary lessons for
math. I had designed the quiz for my own class and many of my colleagues had
asked to use it as well. I found that it was a popular resource and I was glad
to share it with others on the Teachers Pay Teachers website.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">The first paid item I posted was a Garbage Inferencing activity. I
chose it because it is one of my most absolute favorite things that we do all
year long in my classroom and I was excited to share it with others. In the
activity, students rummage through pre-made "garbage bags" that their
teachers "took from her new neighbors trash can." Students then use
the items in the trash bag to make inferences about what my new neighbors might
be like. They love it! At the end of the year, many of them still reference
that lesson as one of their very favorites.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">When we need to fill time, we do quick "book
commercials." Students know that their commercials have to be short and
sweet - just like a real commercial. They stand up in front of the room and
advertise the book they are reading. Other students write the title down in
their reading journals so they can go check it out at the library if they think
it sounds like a good read. It is so much fun! Students are usually chomping at
the bit to share their books with each other and it really amps up their attitude
toward reading in general. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">One year I took a group of gifted students to a science museum. It
was the perfect field trip. We were studying the topics of the day. My students
took over the question and answer section. My favorite quote from the day
occurred when one of my students was asked what would happen if his breath was
taken away. He replied with the most natural answer, "I would die."
To this day, I don't remember what the answer was suppose to be but I still see
him on the stage with shock in his eyes as the presenter stated he would take
my student's breath away.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

flight is. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Valentine's Day is supposed to be fun-filled, yet there are students who wait anxiously for invitations to dances </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">or </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">parties</span></span><span style="color: red;"><span style="color: red;"> only to be disappointed. <span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="color: red;">How can teachers help students on Valentine's Day? Become the mysterious Valentine's Day donor! It's an easy task, especially if you teach lower elementary students. Purchase special cards or treats then slip them into students' bags or desks. No need to fill out the "From" section since that is part of the mystery. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="color: red;"><br /></span></span>

Many junior high and high schools partner with local florists for special deals and deliveries. Contact the florist and explain your holiday project: "Hi, I'm ___(Name)____, a __(Grade Level/Subject Matter)____ teacher at ___(School)____. I have a group of students who may not receive holiday cards or gifts. I'd like to anonymously purchase _____ single roses with only the recipients' names listed on the cards. Please, do not disclose my name regardless of bribes offered. By the way, do you have any special promotions for educators?" </span><span style="color: red;">The key to the holiday project's success is secrecy, so don't reveal to anyone that you are the donor. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="color: red;">Your gesture of kindness will always be remembered by students, and the hunt to uncover the mysterious donor's name is fulfilling to watch.</span></span><br />

I am in awe of some of the fabulous resources, both paid and free, on the site.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I absolutely loved reading as a kid, but my favorite for many
years was Harriet the Spy. It was the first chapter book I ever read, and I
thought the idea of spying on people was very cool. I definitely could be found
hiding in closets and under couches "taking notes" about my sisters
and parents.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I would really like teachers to have more say in educational
policies. I recently saw a post on Pinterest that poked fun at the fact that
politicians who don't have any classroom experience are in control. That needs
to change.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Ask students what "equality" means, and their definitions are as different as their personalities. To better understand how students arrive at meanings of words, pass out large sheets of butcher paper to pairs or small groups of students. Ask students to map "equality". Have groups choose either connotation (associated) or denotation (dictionary) meanings: </span><br />

adults. When we take everything away from them except the basic requirements
for education, we are robbing them of great opportunities.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I love decorating and art! I'm a K-5 Title I Teacher and a 4th
Grade math teacher, but I have a sort of secret love for art. Everything in my
classroom has to be in some way linked together, by color, by design or by
theme. I carefully balance the colors in my room (it's rainbow theme) so there
is never more of one color than another. My favorite part of putting together
my TpT products is adding the design and themes, the final touches. I'm
constantly thinking of ways to create learning materials for my classroom walls
that are fun on the eyes for people passing by or the students in my room and
also equally educational.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">My greatest achievement is striking a balance between work and
family. In the last two years I have completed my Masters degree while also
delivering two extremely premature babies only 11 months apart (one was 2lbs,
the other was 3 lbs). My husband, who is also an elementary teacher, and I have
spent a lot of time in hospitals over the last two years. In the mean time, we
have continued our paths, completed our Master's degrees and stayed the course
with our teaching careers. It's been a roller coaster, but we made it happen
and life is great on the other side!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">My first "Free" item was "Word Decoding

one of the most basic yet most helpful classroom tools I have for my Title I

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">My first paid item were the "I Have, Who Has" sight word
games. I chose these because I had made them for my Title I students last year
and I saw them really make a difference with their sight word recognition. I
also wasn't sure exactly how TpT worked, or how well I would do, so I chose something
that was a safer bet.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

experience?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I remember when my Junior High took the entire 7th grade class to
see The Treasures of the Tzars. It was a
really great experience, but I mostly remember going to the zoo afterward and
the whole class being kicked out because some boys were feeding skittles to the
animals. We ended up only leaving about 15 minutes early, and instead of my
class being punished, they simply cancelled the 7th grade trip in later
years. My class was allowed to go on
field trips year after year. As much as
I enjoyed the field trips, I remember thinking that the teachers and
administrators had probably not made the best decision in that regard, and
wondering how they came to that decision. I was always thinking like a teacher
I guess!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">

from your time on Teachers Pay Teachers?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I have learned that teachers are even more selfless and supportive
than I ever knew! The forums on TPT are just a wealth of helpful information,
and I am always amazed how quickly teachers will come to your rescue when you
have a question, and how happy they truly are to help!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">

student?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">When I was in about 4th grade, my
teacher recommended that I read the book The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman
Juster. I opened it, without expecting much from it at all. At that time in my
life, it was exactly what I needed.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"> I was blown away by the
clever word play and subtle references. I always felt that most books that were
geared toward kids my age were somewhat boring and talked down to us. This was
one of the first books that I had read that I felt really assumed we were
smart! It really renewed my love of
reading, and I still smile every time I think of it. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<b><span style="color: #008040; font-size: 16.0pt;"> 4. What is
something you would like to see in the future, for education?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I would like to see all college education programs educate every
future teacher about special education in a meaningful, effective manner. In every
school that I have worked, there has been a slight (and sometimes not so
slight) divide between general education teachers and special education
teachers. I am not a special education teacher, but I have had years of
experience working with special education students, and I know that they too
feel that divide. I would love to see one cohesive education program that
includes all students equally.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<b><span style="color: #008040; font-size: 16.0pt;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>5. What is something fun about you that
teachers don't know about you?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I am an enthusiastic art collector! I especially love supporting
and collecting art from local artists. My boyfriend is an artist (ceramics and
sculpture) so I have a varied collection of 2D and 3D art. If the artwork
involves paper in some way, I almost always gravitate toward it!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<b><span style="color: #008040; font-size: 16.0pt;"> <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>6. What is an achievement, in
education or otherwise, that you have accomplished?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I bought my first house at the age of 19 and my second at 26. I
paid rent at my first apartment for about 18 months and knew that I was the
type of person that needed to know that my money was going toward equity and
that someday I would get that money back, with a profit. I am very proud of the
decisions that I have made and the feeling of responsibility and control over
my life that this has earned me.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>

that you posted up on Teachers Pay Teachers? <span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>What made you choose that?</span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">My first item was an activity
that I call Boggle Your Mind! It is a Boggle game board that is simple to use,
but that allows invaluable practice for students in improving their word
knowledge and encoding skills.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I chose this activity because I am passionate about the importance
of regular word study in the classroom, and this is an activity that I have
used time and time again, and have found incredible success with. I also love how easily this activity lends
itself to differentiation amongst students, and I made sure to include tips for
differentiating and 30 sample boards for teachers to use. No more worrying if
the grid you made has enough words in it, or even worse, that students will
find an inappropriate word in it! Once a simple Boggle grid is made, this
activity can be done all year without any additional planning or time-consuming
prep!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<b><span style="color: #008040; font-size: 16.0pt;"> 8. What was your
first 'Paid' item that you posted up on Teachers Pay Teachers? What made you
choose that? </span></b><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">The first paid item that I
posted, if I remember correctly, was my set of Math Vocab Word Wall Cards. It is a resource of 76 math vocab terms of
varying difficulty, accompanied by visual definitions for the words. Once the concept is taught, students can use
these cards, either in a word wall or other location, as a resource to remembering
what that term means. They can also be
used as a visual reference when initially teaching a concept. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I chose this item because it is one that I have shared with fellow
teachers at schools I have worked at, and they have always been a hit. In fact, it was while passing out these cards,
that I first heard about TPT! A teacher told me that they looked so
professional that I should sell them on TPT!
I went to the site to check it out, loved what I saw, and immediately
began posting! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I wish I had an exciting hobby like mountain climbing or white
water rafting, but the truth is, my "go to" time filler has aways
been, and probably always will be, creating teaching resources and researching
new lesson ideas. Nothing makes me happier
than finding a genius new idea, suggested by another teacher! This is probably
the main reason that I am so excited to have found TPT! It literally brings
everything that I love together!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">As the administrator of my building’s computer lab, I have learned a lot about school technology management. Taking care of hardware is a very important skill for our children to learn--as important as managing programs once they have logged on.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Here are<span style="color: #0000ee;"><span style="color: purple;"> <span style="color: black;">some </span></span><span style="color: black;">best practice</span> </span>tips for a productive trip to the school computer lab:</span><br />

<div>
<h4>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: purple;">Ready, Set, Go!</span></span></h4>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Before leaving the<span style="color: #0000ee;"> home</span> classroom, have students stand in "lunch-line order". </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Reinforce the rule </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">that they get whichever computer they end up with. No scrambling for the "best" computer upon arrival in the lab </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">is allowed</span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">. After all, cords do not fare well during "scrambling"!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Also, instruct students to bring other classwork, such as </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">a book to read or </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">unfinished assignments to complete, especially during testing days. Once students finish their computer work, they need to remain sitting quietly until class is over. Before long, students understand that using their time wisely in the computer lab is important.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Upon entering the computer lab, </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">be sure</span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> to look over the stations b</span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">efore children sit down</span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">. All problems with equipment should be taken care of before students take their seats.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Next, model how students should sit while they are at their computer stations. Demonstrate how to pull out chairs then open computers and select appropriate buttons to push. Also, show students how to properly hold their headphones with two hands then to adjust them to fit their heads. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Finally, it's time to begin the task of the day, whether it is research or testing.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Before students complete their assignments, model the steps for wrapping up their time in the lab. <span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Always build in some class time for clean up. The school computer lab is a classroom where others teach after you, and they expect technology to be ready to use. Instruct students to save their work and shut down computers five minutes before time to exit the lab.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></span><br /><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">If laptops are being used, remind students to clear all cords from keyboards before they gently close the lids. I like to finish by having kids say, "Thank you!" to their partner, the computer, then pat the lids when done! Remind students to stay seated until all computer lids are closed and the signal to move is given.</span><br />

<h4>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="color: purple;">Final Steps</span></span></h4>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The last critical step in the computer lab is to </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">properly push away from tables. Modeling this step for students reduces the risk of upsetting carefully-controlled tangles of cords that link computers to the Internet. Also, accidents, such as keyboards or laptops falling to the floor, are avoided. First, have students scoot forward in their chairs until their feet touch the floor. Then, they place their hands on the sides of their chairs rather than the edges of the tables and arise from their seats. <div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I loved the "Little House On The Prairie" books! Those
books really helped me to become interested in reading, which led to reading
becoming one of my favorite hobbies. I usually read a book a week during the
school year and can read a couple of books a week during the summer.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I would like for students to have the opportunity to read for fun,
or at least have more control over what they read. I know so many students
these days do not want to read because they are told what they have to read and
they do not get the opportunity to read genres and types of text that are
interesting to them. Then they start feeling like reading is a chore that has
to be done for school because they have a book they have to read for AR or for a
project or one that is assigned by their teacher and they do not have the
chance to read a book of their choosing. I wish that students would have more
opportunities to pick books that are interesting to them so that they will want
to read and find that reading can be fun and not just something you have to do
for school. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I love to travel. There is not anywhere that I'm not willing to go
visit at least once. Here is a list of a few of the places that I've been:
Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Italy, Greece, France, Spain and England. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I chose this game because when I joined TPT, this was a game that
I had just made to use in my classroom and my students really enjoyed it. This
game led to the creation of a couple of other frog themed games. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I chose this one because I had made a set of word family games to
go along with our frog theme that we had in the spring. I split the games up
into different groups (there is also a part 2 and part 3) and decided to put
them on TPT along with my frog math game freebie. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I took my students to a play for Junie B. Jones this past year.
Half way through the play I felt a tug on my ankle and jumped up. One of my
students popped up FROM UNDERNEATH my chair! She had come to tell me that she
"WAS Junie B!" She also asked me if I "had noticed before how much
she was like Junie B." I told her yes and sent her back to her seat the
"normal" way. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I have learned that it is important to check and double check and
triple check behind yourself when creating new products. There is nothing more

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">A book that I read over and over and over again was "Gone Away Lake" by Elizabeth Enright. I loved the idea of finding an abandoned summer getaway

Celebrate with your students by sharing the book <i>Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins </i>by Eric Kimmel<i>.</i> In the book, Hershel arrives at a new town just in time for Hanukkah, but the town is strangely dark. No familiar Hanukkah candles flicker in the windows. It is goblins, Hershel discovers, that keep the townspeople from celebrating . The town’s goblins like to smash dreidels, destroy menorahs, and throw latkes on the ground. The goblins hate Hanukkah.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Even though he is new to town, Hershel bravely volunteers to stop the goblins and save Hanukkah. Armed with only pickles, eggs, and a menorah, he climbs the hill to the synagogue to face down the goblins. Each night Hershel meets new a new goblin, and each night he defeats it with his swiftness and logic. As in the story of the Maccabees’ victory over the Greeks (the reason we celebrate Hanukkah), it is Hershel’s clever planning that carries him through each confrontation.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i>Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins</i> is a Caldecott Award-winning children’s book that begs to be read aloud. The humorous illustrations and wisecracking dialogue keep the sometimes dark book from becoming scary. It is a treasure for kindergarten and up.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">It's about time educators revisited Higher Order Thinking Skills or HOTS. Most teachers have some knowledge of Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. However, did you know Benjamin is not actually the author of the taxonomy? It bears his name because he chaired the committee that developed it. Therefore, the next time someone asks you to chair a committee, you may want to say "Yes!"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">It seems as though Bloom's Taxonomy has been around forever, and, actually, it has been around since 1956, according to Overbaugh and Schultz, who wrote “<a href="http://ww2.odu.edu/educ/roverbau/Bloom/blooms_taxonomy.htm" target="_blank">Bloom’s Taxonomy</a>”. It has, however, changed over the decades. When first proposed, the taxonomy dealt with three domains of education: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. The goal of the three domains was to produce holistic education. Over time, however, the cognitive domain has become the taxonomy we think of when Bloom's Taxonomy is mentioned. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The taxonomy is constructed as a scaffold; the lower levels must be broad and strong in order for the upper levels to be built. In an age of standardized testing mania, knowledge and comprehension, the foundation levels, are the name of the game. Since those are the most easily evaluated components, performance is naturally based on those levels. Thus, mostly teachers of gifted and talented students have time to work on upper levels of the taxonomy since their students, presumably, have the requisite knowledge and understanding. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Here are two versions of Bloom's Taxonomy:</span><br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">My students one year went on a field trip to Nature's
Classroom. This outdoor learning
opportunity brought me back to my experience as a year-round camp
director. It was amazing to see the kids
trudging through the mud, investigating nature, dissecting creatures, learning
to build forts, building campfires, picking edible plants, etc. For weeks after this field trip, my kids
would go out and explore their own backyard and bring in different leaves, bugs
(yuck!), interesting rocks, etc. to share with their classmates. You could tell that this field trip really
grabbed their attention.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I have learned so many things from the wonderful educators who
collaborate on this site. One of the
simplest things I have learned, but has saved me so much time is to create
projects in powerpoint because it is so much easier to manipulate clipart and
word art. They also inspired me to start
a blog. Check it out at

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I'm laughing out loud as I write this, but I have always loved “The
Pain and The Great One”. I used to tell
my younger sister that she was the pain, and I of course, was the great
one. I wrote many sequels to this story
in my elementary school career during different story writing times (it wasn't
called "writer's workshop" back then!)<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<u1:p></u1:p>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">I would love for schools to be infused with technology. The interactive and engaging learning
opportunities that are available, or will be available, for students will truly
enhance learning. It would be great if
the government invested more money in education as well!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">

As educators, we've anticipated and waited all year for one of <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/" target="_blank">Teachers Pay Teachers biggest sales</a> (up to 28% off!). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Sales/Ongoing" target="_blank"><img alt="Cyber Monday" class="cyber_banner_ongoing" src="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/img/cyber-2012-700x90.jpg" width="628px;" /></a> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">However, currently, there are many fellow teachers who are in need of help and support. A huge "Thank You!" to those who have started projects to help out less-fortunate friends and neighbors across the world. If you have such a site, please post it in the Comments section to receive more donations. For example, <a href="http://publicschoolteachersodyssey.blogspot.com/2012/11/teachers-help-teachers.html" target="_blank">Teachers Help Teachers</a>, by <a href="http://publicschoolteachersodyssey.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Laurah Jurca of The ESOL Odyssey</a>; she set up a site for donations of school products to Hurricane Sandy educators. After all, that is what CyberMonday and Tuesday are about--thankfulness for a place to share great products that help educators!</span><br />

Motivating students to volunteer during the holidays is simple. Find projects students can create and give. Everything from cut-outs of holiday themed items to impersonal letters to thank you cards can bring smiles of joy to faces. Donate the hand-made products to adult living centers, hospitals, and nursing homes. Also, students can volunteer to perform charitable work, such as reading to elderly patients or performing a play at a nursing home. Homeless shelters need extra hands and so do food kitchens. Frequently, students need to look no further than their own neighborhoods to volunteer their time. They might try babysitting for busy parents, putting up Christmas decoration, or raking leaves. A school toy drive or community project, such as collecting books, is a excellent way to promote volunteerism. </span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Show students the holiday season is about giving rather than receiving. </span><br />
